Over the past couple of weeks I've been feeling pretty anxious about giving birth again. I know that this is normal, but I think the difference for me this time is I have something to compare it to (read Matilda's birth story
here) and I've done a lot more research vs taking the "ignorance is bliss" approach. Ha. I keep worrying about labor progressing super fast. We met with our doula,
Cynthya, this past week after our first appointment with our midwives. She gave us a really great list of things to pack for the hospital and I wanted to share with you what we'll be bringing. I am packing for a potential water birth, so some of the items are specific to going that route. I've been trying to prepare for the big day by using lavender every day to help me relax (I even put it in my car!) and taking time to focus on my intentions. Have you watched "
More Business of Being Born?" All the nerves aside, I just can't wait to meet her.
swim ring - to lean on in the tub.
flameless candles - to create a soothing atmosphere. Christmas lights work great, too!
sports bra - for the modest mama.
water bottle - to stay hydrated.
bottom spray - for post partum.
lavender oil - for relaxing massage.
rice bags - when heated, offers relief with contractions.
flip flops - to stay off hospital floors.
honey sticks - for quick energy.
iphone + earbuds - check out the ibirth app.
nursing gown - comfy and cute and easy to nurse in.
nursing bra - for extra support.
Other things to consider: socks, a robe, camera + charger, phone charger, music player, birthing ball, an outfit to come home in (think maternity unfortunately), your own pillow (bring a patterned pillow case), healthy snacks, movies, toiletries, baby book for foot prints, your birth plan, and the car seat to get that little one home in.
What would you add to the list?

We're planning a water birth, too! What a helpful list. I had a precipitous labor with my last, but I don't think it's very common, so I wouldn't fret too much. A doula will be a great help to you if it does progress quickly... you'll do great! I recently watched "More Business", and it got me excited about laboring again.
ReplyDeleteI DID NOT KNOW! how exciting. congrats to your adorable family DeAnna!!
DeleteThanks! :)
DeleteI think the comfy light weight robe and your own pillow with case is key! I am so excited for you and understand the nerves, totally. It's going to be great and she'll be here before you know it! Can hardly wait to find out her name:)
ReplyDeleteyes! the robe is a keeper. thanks for the encouragement and i can't wait to share!
DeleteOne thing I forgot to bring this last time around was unscented body lotion. My lotion had a slight fragrance and bothered Violet when she was trying to nurse.
ReplyDeleteaw sweet violet! mental note made.
DeleteCurious: why patterned pillow case?
ReplyDeleteSo excited for you and can't wait to hear all about it.
I use a lavender/chamomile spray on my pillows at night to promote SLEEP!
the patterned case is so your fabulous pillow doesn't get confused for a hospital one. :)
DeleteI loved having my pillow and robe from home! Good idea about the patterned cover! Cute blog, excited to read more on your pregnancy journey!
ReplyDeleteThe greatest thing was the mega plate of sushi my mom-in-law brought me for my first post delivery dinner. Arrange to have your favorite food that you have been missing brought to you if possible. Is it sad to say that the only things that topped it were our sweet little man himself and Joe being home from work when it happened. Hugs and prayers.
ReplyDeleteyou're so prepared, you'll do great. I havent read Matilda's birth story yet but I think I will go there next :) (I love me some birht stories) did you have her naturally as well? If not, not to worry It is really not bad. I had a hospital natural birth with Oliver and I am super jealous you are going to have a water birth, that is what I want next time around. anywho cant wait for her to arrive! good luck (although i dont think you'll need it)
ReplyDeleteCan you tell me what brand that nursing bra in the picture is? I'm on a hunt fior a good, supportive (but not underwire) nursing bra! Thanks!
