OUR FIRST DAYS WITH PHOEBE

I realize that coming here and writing will be quite the challenge over the next few weeks, but I wanted to document our first days with our little Phoebe. One of the things I was most excited about was Matilda meeting her little sister. We got home late tuesday night and she was sleeping. My brother and sister were here doing laundry and waiting for us. Talk about thankful. My mom was sick and Matilda was too and everyone rallied together to support us while we were at the hospital. Guinness was swooped up by my dad. All beings were being cared for. Early wednesday morning Matilda came in our room and started squealing, "She came out, she came out!"
One of my dearest friends, Jessica, came over that morning to document Phoebe's first moments at home. I am forever grateful. I especially can't wait to see these photos of Matilda holding Phoebe in her bed. She loves holding her and is so sweet. We did have a few moments that afternoon where I could tell Matilda was struggling to find her place and that has been one of the more challenging Mama moments, because I want both of my girls to feel equally loved and adored - because they are! I think that day was tough especially because she didn't feel well and was so tired.
We felt an immediate outpouring of love. One of my best friends, Jessie, also came over that morning with food, flowers, wine and something special for Matilda. We have felt such warmth and love from our friends and family. We spent Thanksgiving here and Matilda went and made the rounds with my family. That afternoon we got plates of leftovers and it was quiet and perfect.

We gave Phoebe her first bath. Matilda got in the tub with her. Phoebe loved it, clearly. We opted out of the bath at the hospital because the vernix is actually an incredible skin moisturizer, so we just rubbed that in her skin and then bathed her with some gentle soap and lavender oil. She smells so amazing. We wanted Matilda to be a part of as many "firsts" as possible.
Our first and only family outing of the week was to the Coker Tree Farm. We go every year after Thanksgiving and we were in and out of there in record time. I just felt like it was now or never. Matilda picked out our tree and it is beautiful and massive. May have to find a temporary home for our coffee table... Between naps and feedings it took us ALL day to decorate it, but it's beautiful and it makes me so happy.
I'm feeling really great and recovering well but yesterday I felt like exhaustion finally set in. Little one has been nursing around the clock and Matilda wants my attention and I just felt a little helpless and weepy. I thought I had escaped the weepiness! Alas. Matilda is at preschool right now and I'm just full of love and gratefulness that our family now includes Phoebe. She is the tiniest, softest, gentlest creature. She has the sweetest disposition and everyone loves her.

i covet your prayers for one of my favorite people who is having surgery this week. thank you.
