LOSING THE BABY WEIGHT: WEEK 1

OK, here we are at week 1. I literally held my breath as I hit publish. I hope you weren't expecting anything too horrifying, like bikini shots or something. I'm not that brave. I thought it would be kind of cool to set each post up as a style post on how to dress while you're transitioning from newly post baby to your old self (or maybe even improved self!). One of my favorite ways to conceal problem areas right now are through the use of scarves and puffy vests. Might as well use 'em while I can before it gets too warm.

Here are my stats for week 1.
Weight: 157
Size: 10/12
Body fat: 18%
Pounds lost: 0

What I'm eating...
For breakfast- greek yogurt with peanut butter and a tiny bit of jelly
For lunch- creative salads with raw cheese
For snacking- hummus with red pepper strips or raw nuts
For dinner- baked chicken and broccoli

see more of my do's and don'ts here, slightly modified to include healthy grains since I'm nursing.

They say you are what you eat and if that's the case then right now I'm cereal bars, pretzels, Ben and Jerrys, and pizza. I've been eating whatever I want. Hence, why I stopped losing weight. None of the above are going to make the cut right now. I'm sticking to whole foods, lots of protein, and a little bit of good carbs. Think ezekial muffins, oatmeal, etc. Nothing processed and I'm only eating those carbs for breakfast in order to allow my body to process them all day. Drinking lots of water with lemon (speeds up your metabolism) and eating protein with every meal and lots of veggies.
Goal for this week: to lose 2 lbs
Reward if I make my goal: new nail polish!

  8. You mentioned "healthy grains" and "good carbs". What do you mean by that? I'm nursing too and want to make sure I'm still being smart. By the end of this plan, do you reincorporate grains and fruits? I'm trying to talk my husband into joining me in this but he is skeptical about having to give up all his favorite things. Thanks.

    1. hi holly! it's basically paleo. you don't want to eat anything processed and unfortunately most breads use genetically modified wheat and gluten which is really hard on our bodies. one thing i will incorporate in a couple of weeks is a weekly "cheat meal" where you eat whatever you want. that's what works for me. good carbs would be sprouted grains (ezekial bread), steel cut oats, berries, and beans. hope that helps!

  10. Hey there, I've been a long time reader of your adorable blog. I read this post last night and couldn't stop thinking about it, so I thought I would share with you my experience with losing the baby-weight after the birth of my second baby. I had lost the actual baby-weight in just a few weeks with him, but I wanted to lose about 20 more pounds because I was heavier than I wanted to be when I got pregnant with him. I adjusted my diet to be high protein, lots of veggies and low carbs. So I ate my carbs in the morning (usually greek yogurt with homemade granola or ezekiel bread with jam) ,and then veggies and protein, along with some fruits and healthy raw nuts the rest of the day. The weight dropped off quickly, but what I didn't realize is that my baby was not gaining weight. I was exclusively breast-feeding and not until his 6 month check-up did I learn that in two months he had only gained 2 oz. My doctor who is also a lactation-specialist told me that if I'm not getting enough calories that my milk becomes watery. So he got the hydration, but not the nutrients. She had me go back to eating regularly (which was healthy in the first place, I had basically just cut out carbs after breakfast) and in a week he was already up 10 oz. So in light of all of that I've learned that eating healthy is incredibly important, but when it comes to being your baby's only source of nutrition, dieting for the mom is a slippery slope. So in my experience, I would be wary of cutting carbs until my baby was eating a good bit of solids, and instead upping my exercise routine. I hope this comment isn't discouraging, I just wanted to share my experience since I related so much to this post.

I love, love your blog and watching your sweet family grow!

    1. thank you so so much jenn for sharing! it's a good reminder to me to make sure i'm still getting plenty of calories which i think i will if i get enough fat. i'll be sure not to be too restrictive. i've been eating like CRAP so i'm really just getting back to whole foods. i really appreciate you looking out for us and i'll be sure to add a note about that in my next post. thanks also for reading and being supportive! i really appreciate it. xo

  11. Thanks, Lesley! I'm hoping this will inspire me! I had some of the above commenter's experience. I ate like crazy--especially the sweets--over the holidays, and finally decided it was high time to lose the baby weight. I started dieting for about a month, and the weight was coming off, but my milk supply really started to decrease. (I pump when I'm at work, so it was clear to me that this was happening.) I went back to eating a whole heck of a lot, and the milk returned to normal. I'm hoping I can find a smarter way to do it this time, and focus more on exercise as well. I'm looking forward to your tips!

  15. Hello there,

My name is Jessica. I still can't remember how I came across your blog. I can't remember if it was Pinterest or from a friend of a friend of a friend. :) In any case, I am 17 weeks pregnant and loved reading your pregnancy posts. I try to keep up with each of your blog updates and today I just had to comment.

First, I applaud you for being so honest about your journey to losing the baby weight. Second, I love how real you are. How I can relate to all that you write! I am nowhere near the weight loss phase of things and actually am packing on the pounds. Something I am struggling very seriously with. So I know that following your blog and watching your weight loss success will be an added confidence booster when my time comes to start working at getting my body back.

    Good lcuk!!

  17. hey lesley!

i am in the same boat as you, except i have less of an excuse because i had my little one 7 months ago! i love your idea of getting new nail polish as a reward - i have a hard time thinking of good rewards that have nothing to do with FOOD :), so I'm gonna borrow that idea. good luck to you!
