STYLE CRISIS

OK, so it's not really a crisis, there are certainly more important things in life but... I've lost my sense of style. I honestly don't know what looks good on me anymore and I have no idea what is chic and in. I mean I can gather what is super popular but I don't know how to wear it. Somewhere between not working in retail anymore and having kids I have become uncool. Not to say that I ever was cool. I have the most awkward memory of being with two of my very stylish friends in NYC and this girl at a Swatch store was like, "Oh, is this your normal friend? She doesn't dress like you guys." I was mortified in my borrowed pink coat and blue new balance tennis shoes. Ouch. This fall I'm determined to get my groove back on a budget. I want pieces that I can mix and match and that are kid-friendly. Obvs. Here's what I am thinking... stripes, layers, navy + black, cognac-colored boots, black jeans, lots of tights and scarves. A uniform of sorts. Stay tuned!

above photo: this girl is impossibly chic (and french but of course)

ps I found this pin board with tons of great ideas

  1. I totally understand. I am feeling the same way, so I end up wearing Yoga clothes every where. I will be looking forward to your posts, because I need some major inspiration (no pressure) :). Btw I love your style and I think you always look chic! xo

  2. I love how transparent you are. So refreshing to read about someone in the blogosphere being normal and feeling a little lost sometimes. I have no doubt that you have a great sense of style and will feel back in your groove in no time.

  3. oh, cognac colored boots sound delish! I'm a big fan of being trendy on a budget- I love to shop at Target, Kohls and Marshalls. Basically, anything on sale. (I rarely ever pay full price for anything)
    Happy shopping!!

  4. Last year I bought the No-Brainer Wardrobe and used that to start re-vamping my closet. I prefer the idea of buying fewer, higher quality pieces (some second hand and vintage even) to the idea of spending money every year on things that are in style.

Still I love Target for easy t-shirts and I've been loving Gap and Loft for affordable pieces.

I can't wait to see where you take your style!

  5. I know that feeling. When we moved to Denmark from Morocco with six months inbetween in the US- I was LOST. I'm still trying to figure out how to dress, but it sure is fun playing and trying new things! We are always our own worst critic. I think you are super cool!

  7. Lesley!!! That is a really terrible thing for someone to say!! I know exactly what you mean. I've found myself making impulse purchases before and then never wear them because they were too "trendy" for me, or I just didn't think before I bought them. Ugh.

Slowly, I've figured out what I like, and now I try to steer clear of places that always treat me SO wrong (can't fit into anything in stores like H&M and Forever 21) So, I stick with my old favorites: Gap, JCrew & Anthropologie with lots of Target mixed in. Just preppy and classic.

Good luck!! I can't wait to follow your journey! And, I agree with the ladies above. I've always thought you were very stylish and have a great vintage + retro vibe!!
