Tips for Moms: 27 Things

Over the break Sam checked off some of my honey-dos and I am very happy about that. We took a pause on house projects because we were both so burned out. For Christmas Sam painted a black wall in our bedroom, hung curtains and a flush mount light (buh-bye fan) and hung shelves for the girls. It has been an uphill battle with the toys and books and I am so pumped with how they turned out. For Phoebe's room we already had the small expedit. Sam centered two wall shelves from IKEA above it with white hardware from Home Depot. I really love how tidy it is. For Matilda's wall mounted bookshelf, Sam used Joni's tutorial from her girls' shared room (one of my favorites!). Gone are the days of stacks of books everywhere! Hurrah! Story time is so much more fun when we can see book covers to choose from. Matilda also puts the books back (with some prompting) so it stays neat. Thanks Sam!!

The other day my mom came over to help (er save?) me as I struggled to tackle piles of laundry and messes and just life. It was right after everything had happened with Guinness and I was feeling a little (lot) down. I'm so thankful to have amazing family that swoop in when the chips are down. My mom said something as she was in a flurry of cleaning, scrubbing, folding that really stuck with me. "Do 27 things." Sometimes the most simple of concepts resonate the greatest with me. 27 is a lucky Feng Shui number and the thought is that if you simply move 27 things that it will create order and productivity in the process. Just a little something to try next time you feel overwhelmed, it really gets you moving. #1 Wipe green smoothie off cabinet #2 Wipe Phoebe's face #3 Clean off spider web in the corner of the kitchen... so on and so forth. Before you know it that room is spic and span.

Do you have any other great cleaning tips? I need some help. Also, you have to check out this amazing gift idea... our dear friends, Kate and Andy, gifted Matilda with the book: The Little Girl who Lost Her Name. It is personalized to Matilda and the book tells the story of how the girl found her name and as you go along you realize that the characters that are helping the little girl are spelling Matilda. It is so amazing, had to share!

  1. Our home has four stories so if I am going upstairs or downstairs I don't waste a trip. There is always something that needs to go up there, or down there that I can take with me. I sit those things on the stair bannister or on the steps as a reminder that they need to move.

  2. Over the past few months we have initiated more organization to our cleaning methods. My husband suggested that we try cleaning like they do in the fire dept. Every day is assigned a chore, that way you aren't trying to clean everything all at once. So we now have Mop Monday, Tub & Toilet Tuesday, Wash Wednesday (I still wash at least one load a day, but this is to make sure everything gets done) and Sheets Saturday. So far it's been helpful and the kids have even caught on to the catchy names.
