Like many of you since the start of COVID we have been pondering the future of school this year. My stomach was in literal knots thinking about what to do. With Matilda going into 6th grade and Phoebe heading into 2nd, it’s not like they were still in preschool. We needed a plan! As the summer hit and bad news has continued we started turning our hearts towards the option of home school. With nerves and overwhelm we finally said YES.

I understand how hard this time is and that not everyone has the option to homeschool. My heart goes out to everyone trying to make their decisions for the fall. I will say as soon as we finally made a plan my heart was so relieved so I’m hoping that feeling comes for you too if you’re still making up your mind!

My first step was to order Wild + Free which I think does an amazing job of answering objections and giving space for different ways of doing school at home. We don’t know that home school will be anything but a gap year for us but we are excited to see what happens and who knows, right? If 2020 has taught us nothing else, it’s that you can truly never say never.

We plan on making this year an adventure, one that I hope the girls always remember with so much fondness. We have booked a lot of airstream travel and plan on road schooling much of the time!

After asking a bunch of questions on Instagram about home school and curriculum, we decided to do The Good and the Beautiful. I used their recommendations for both grades and got shared curriculum for history and science which I’m excited about. Sam will actually be the main teacher and he’s SO good and patient and I know it will be such a special experience for the girls.

If you need another great option, most states offer FREE online charter schools. I have heard amazing things about Georgia Cyber Academy, but look up your state to find yours.

A few things if you decide to pull the trigger:

  • Email your school’s principle to withdraw from the school year. This makes it so much easier on them and our principles were SO kind and gracious. Brings tears to my eyes because we just feel for everyone right now.

  • State your intent in your state. For us we registered here. Check out your state’s rules. Search “[your state] and public education home school”
