BARN DOOR STAIR GATE

I haven't shared anything around the house in a while and I am so proud of Sam's handy work that I had to change that stat. I even made him pose for a picture with his girls after he got home from work. Phoebe has just recently become very interested in the stairs... standing on them, crawling up the first two, gnawing on them. You know the usual. Since our weekend plans took a sudden u-turn, Sam found himself with some extra time. OK, so that's a little bit of a stretch. In between taking care of the three of us he decided to start a a baby proofing project. There is nothing wrong with using a plastic baby gate, but for about the same cost Sam built this rustic, barn door version. Pretty perfect for our modern farmhouse vision. He totally ran with the project after I showed him this seriously awesome

tutorial from Remodelaholic

(

thanks for the tip Karen!

). See the gate in its full glory after the jump...

The tutorial is super clear and easy to follow (per Sam), he just adjusted some of the measurements to fit the space. We also used a good pinterest trick that we learned from our friends Christy and Erik, where you screw the gate into a piece of wood that attaches to the staircase newel post with matching zip ties. Genius! That way you're not screwing anything into the stair case. He did attach a piece of wood to the wall to screw the gate into, but that's a lot easier to patch. A couple of other things

we

he did were to distress the wood hammering on to screws and other odds and ends and he put hinges on the outside of the door to make it look even more rustic. We are really happy with how it turned out. The door has naturally turned into a castle door, we spent all day playing with it. Can't enter without the secret password... :)

What do you think?!

I'm really so super thankful to have a husband that actually

enjoys

making things beautiful and working with his hands.

Thank you Sam for makin' dreams come true around here!!
